Antibacterial Activities of Extracellular Metabolites of Symbiotic Bacteria, Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus Isolated from Entomopathogenic Nematodes

چکیده مقاله:
Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus are members of the family Enterobacteriaceae, and are engaged in a mutualistic association with the entomopathogenic nematodes, Steinernema and Heterorhabditis, respectively. In the present study, the organic fraction of ethyl acetate bacterial crude extracts of the symbiotic bacteria, Xenorhabdus stockiae and Photorhabdus luminescens isolated from entomopathogenic nematodes, were characterized by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopic (FTIR) methods, and evaluated for their antibacterial activity on selected pathogenic bacteria, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi and Klebsiella pneumonia by agar well plate method. When compared to X. stockiae, P. luminescens showed higher antibacterial activity at maximum concentration on K. pneumonia and S. aureus, respectively. FTIR analysis of the crude ethyl acetate extract of X. stockiae showed the corresponding peaks values of 2373.33 and 544.93 cm-1 whereas P. luminescens showed the presence of peaks at 2128.00 and 552.80 cm-1, respectively indicating the functional group of P-H and isocyanides stretching. The present study suggests that the antibacterial activity might be due to the effective compounds from the symbiotic bacteria of entomopathogenic nematodes, and that they could be used as bioinsecticides in the future.

متن کاملDiversity of Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus spp. and Their Symbiotic Entomopathogenic Nematodes from Thailand
Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus spp. are bacterial symbionts of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs). In this study, we isolated and characterized Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus spp. from across Thailand together with their associated nematode symbionts, and characterized their phylogenetic diversity. EPNs were isolated from soil samples using a Galleria-baiting technique. Bacteria from EPNs were cultu...
متن کاملComposition and Biophysical Properties of Lipids in Xenorhabdus nematophilus and Photorhabdus luminescens, Symbiotic Bacteria Associated with Entomopathogenic Nematodes.
Primary and secondary forms of Photorhabdus luminescens Hm and Xenorhabdus nematophilus N2-4 were grown at 18 and 28(deg)C for 24 to 96 h, and we made determinations of the fatty-acid compositions of total lipids and of the fluidity measured by 5-doxyl-stearic acid embedded in liposomes made from total lipids. The levels of the unsaturated fatty acids 16:1 and 18:1 (those with chain lengths of ...
متن کاملPhylogenetic and cophylogenetic relationships of entomopathogenic nematodes (Heterorhabditis: Rhabditida) and their symbiotic bacteria (Photorhabdus: Enterobacteriaceae).
Mutualistic association between entomopathogenic Photorhabdus bacteria and Heterorhabditis nematodes represents one of the emerging model systems in symbiosis studies, yet little is known about this partnership from a coevolutionary perspective. Herein, we investigated phylogenetic and cophylogenetic relationships of Heterorhabditis and Photorhabdus strains using molecular markers Internal Tran...
متن کاملGenome sequences of Photorhabdus luminescens strains isolated from entomopathogenic nematodes from southern India
We report here draft whole genome sequences of three novel strains of Photorhabdus luminescens of 5.2-5.3 Mbps in size, and with a G + C content of 42.5% (each). Symbiotic γ-proteobacteria belonging to the genera, Photorhabdus (Family: Enterobacteriaceae) with their natural vectors, the entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) (Phylum: Nematoda; Order: Rhabditida; Family: Heterorhabditidae), have emerg...

In the recant decade, biopesticides with entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) have been developed with using different methods and materials. But the production of such biopesticides has always accompanied by some limitations such as low quality o...
